Anti-corrosion Pioneer in Marine Engineering

Oil drilling platforms in the Norwegian North Sea endure harsh marine environments year-round. Seawater at -20°C, laden with salt particles, constantly impacts the platform’s steel structure. Yet, 304 stainless steel plates demonstrate remarkable resilience in this test. Engineers conducted an experiment in which the plates remained intact after 10,000 cycles of testing in a simulated environment subjected to 12 tons of wave force per square meter.

The secret lies in 304 stainless steel’s exceptional pitting corrosion resistance equivalent value (PREN), which ensures it remains rust-free for 20 years in high-salt environments. The sealing performance of stainless steel flanges at submarine oil pipeline joints is even more impressive. Statistics show that using this material has reduced the crude oil leakage rate to 0.001%, significantly contributing to marine ecological conservation. A maintenance engineer on the platform explained that when using ordinary steel, rust removal and painting were previously required every six months. Switching to 304 stainless steel reduces this to a routine inspection every three years, saving significant manpower and resources while also reducing the risks of offshore operations. In the journey of conquering the ocean, 304 stainless steel plate is a well-deserved anti-corrosion pioneer and a fearless warrior in human exploration of the ocean.
